I bridged my comcast router to let this router handle the WAN and routing functions. The result was greater bandwidth while eliminating previous connection problems. This router can email you when incoming connections occur. Initial setup was easy, adcanced setup was difficult, due to the organisation of the interface (as in most routers) A few settings appear to be very well hidden. Had more signal strenth than the xfinity standard issue routerRead more Helpful Comment Report abuseSome Nerd in a Cubicle5.0 out of 5 starsAwesome router for the priceFebruary 15, 2013Format: Personal ComputersVerified PurchaseI had a Buffalo WHR-G300N, but wanted to increase my range, and looked to the WHR-300HP. Combined with a pair of HDE 16dBi antennas, I can now receive full signal everywhere in my house (which is impressive, since my house is entirely cinder block.) The only downside of the WHR-300HP is that it uses digitally signed firmware, which means no loading custom versions of DD-WRT. But working with Buffalo’s version of DD-WRT (the ‘professional’ firmware), it does most of what I need, and has a built-in PPTP VPN server (it’s not OpenVPN…but oh well.)And reviewers who give this router a poor rating because it doesn’t offer the range they’re looking for…have to remember that the ‘High Power’ feature of this router only applies to the transmit power. In order for the router to receive the signal from your device, the device must also transmit at high power, or you must install high-gain antennas. I highly recommend getting HDE 16dBi antennas…they’re dirt cheap…and work as needed.Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseDoctorCubicle5.0 out of 5 starsSo SmoothFebruary 12, 2014Format: Personal ComputersVerified PurchaseSo let me preface this with what we were using before. An old Motorola cable modem from like six years ago and an Apple Airport Express that’s even older. I am not, by any means an IT pro, but I have picked up a lot from troubleshooting basic stuff and learning from various friends in the field. Take the following with that in mind.So far we’ve had this baby running for a little over a month with no issues. The slim design is a real bonus as my desk is already at capacity with a full-tower case, two monitors, full size keyboard and printer on it. The signal is surprisingly strong. We live in a one bedroom on the third floor and I get wireless signal about a half city block away from home via my cell phone. We have something like 10 devices connected via wifi and there has yet to be any issues with it. I may have messed up something in the setup, but currently my wired PC gets considerable lag when my wireless PS3 is streaming movies. nothing major, but Skype calls get distorted from time to time.Speaking of setup, talk about a breeze! The UI is kinda ugly, but the instructions are simple enough to follow for the basics. I can see where a lot of the features would come in handy, but personally I didn’t need them, I just wanted a reliable product and most of my IT friends said Buffalo was the way to go. So far, with intense gaming sessions, livestreaming, and general home use it holds up great!Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuse Joel Schopp VINE VOICE 5.0 out of 5 starsDD-WRT is the selling pointApril 25, 2013Format: Personal ComputersVerified PurchaseBuying this router comes down to if you want DD-WRT pre-installed or not. DD-WRT is an opensource wireless firmware that is amazingly reliable, fast, and feature packed. Hard core tech people will almost all take any router they buy and install DD-WRT on it, a procedure not for the feint of heart. This router comes pre-installed with DD-WRT, allowing hard core tech people to save themselves time and ensure device compatibility. It also allows non tech people to benefit from the features and stability without having to be techies themselves.I’ve used this router for awhile now and the latency is low, transmission distance is high, it has never slowed down, never crashed, never misbehaved in any way. It quite simply does its job and does it well. This sounds so simple but I’ve used a lot of routers over the years that are unreliable and cause me grief.Save yourself grief, buy this router.Read more One person found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abusecarlosvcollado3.0 out of 5 starsOk router, was expecting moreDecember 31, 2012Format: Personal ComputersVerified PurchaseRouter so far is good. Was expecting a bit higher throughput and reception. Replaced old medialink router with this one hoping to take advatange of the DDWRT and gain better performance. First, I consider myself a pretty techincal guy, and had a took me a bit to get up an running. This is not for the average user as the software is a bit complicated. Second, the reception is not as good as my old medialink router which I placed at the same spot. Lastly, and the main reason I only gave this 3 stars is througput. After using it over a month, I noticed that on internet speed test websites, this router measures some of this higherst throughput that I have seen, but when it comes to real life browsing and downloading I can noticed a real difference (it was slower using this router). Worst of all, I noticed a biger slow down on my IPAD and IPHONE devices. Not sure if its the settings or the router it self. When I have some time, I am going to go back into the router and play with the settings to see if I can improve the throughput.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseFrank De La Riva5.0 out of 5 starsWi Fi quality and range is Great! Stable and constantly available signal make WiFi shareableJanuary 16, 2014Format: Personal ComputersVerified PurchaseIt is easy to setup. Called Internet Service Provider for IP address for this unit and one for the cable modem (gateway address), with a subnet of 255.255.255.255 and I was up and running on the internet. The signal strength was excellent compared to the Motorola Arris DG860 which is WiFi ready. I was able to do facetime on my iphone 4s with a reliable, unbroken conversation. The antennas increase the range around my 3000 sq. foot home with good, steady communication. I dislike all of the features which are complex and overwhelming, albeit powerful in the hands of a novice to Wifi security. Wish there was documentation that said here are the various optional defaults for greatest security, greatest Wifi sharing to a select few, or optimal balancing between maximum encryption and reliability. For now took the defaults, and I will have to study the various featuresRead more One person found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 85 reviewsWrite a customer review What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?Buffalo AirStation HighPower N300 Wireless Router (WHR-300HP2)3.6 out of 5 stars46$37.95ASUS Dual-Band 2×2 AC1300 Super-Fast Wifi 4-port Gigabit Router with MU-MIMO and USB 3.0 (RT-ACRH13)4.1 out of 5 stars1,854$59.49Linksys WRT54GL Wi-Fi Wireless-G Broadband Router3.9 out of 5 stars6,183$29.99 Pages with related products.
