I can’t say enough about this product or the company who sold it (DR Cell). It was an inexpensive solution to getting the Apple-specific software I needed, runs Sierra, and was cheap to double the ram and add an SSD. Internal DVD drive? How convenient is that! If you run Sierra on it though, I recommend doing the upgrades. It can be frustratingly slow on 4GB and a 5400rpm drive. A few scratches and dings on it but nothing a custom shell can’t cover. Love it!Read more 3 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseDavid Thomas5.0 out of 5 starsA definite win!May 5, 2018Verified PurchaseReceived my laptop on time… The only thing I needed to do was calibrate the battery and do some OS updates, which I was expecting needed to be done regardless, but once I did that, I haven’t had any problems. The laptop was in the condition that was described, with very little wear along with what looked like a new or barely used charger. I’m highly satisfied with my purchase and I will most definitely be recommending this product to my friends and family who are in the market for also.Read more 3 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuse MWebb TOP 1000 REVIEWER 5.0 out of 5 starsSSD Upgrade Greatly Improves the User ExperienceJuly 27, 2012Verified PurchaseIf you are reading this review, I hope you are shopping for a good used 13.3′ MacBook Pro MC700LL/A, or already own one(I bought mine new from Amazon in May of last year (2011). Otherwise, you should know that Apple released a replacement the Apple MacBook Pro MD101LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) and check the reviews in the major media to see if that one would be a better choice for you. You should also know that the market is favoring the ‘Air’ line, which is much thinner and lighter, and the 13.3′ Air actually has a higher resolution screen than this ‘old schoool’ MacBook Pro.That having been said, there are some reasons why this ‘early 2011’ (that’s how Apple describes it) still has a lot of life in it:1. First of all and above all, the ‘old school’ MacBook Pro comes with a much larger hard drive than its MacBook Air siblings. This is critical for a lot of users. My 2011 (this one) came with a 320gb hard drive and the 2012 bumps that to 500 gb.2. Second, the MacBook Pro comes with a built-in DVD player. The net result is you have a very traditional, all in one design, where you can carry along all your music (for most users, most likely) and a sizable chunk of video. You can also easily pop off the back and upgrade to a 750gb hard drive for a very nominal cost. See iFixit for a handy installation guide – search ‘MacBook Pro 13′ 2011’ to land on their search results page, then narrow your search to ‘Repair Manuals’ via the tab.The penalty is about a 1.5 pound weight increase compared to a 13.3′ Macbook Air – but if you end up bringing along an external DVD player and/or external hard drive to supplement the meager built-in capacities of the Air, you will have pretty similar final package weights.3. Third, you can ‘recline’ the screen on the MacBook Pro much further back than you can on the Air. This is a design limitation of the Air – the base isn’t heavy enough to support the screen tilted too far back, and the base is thin, meaning the hinge has less depth in which to operate. When does the ability to tilt the screen back become important? Not when sitting at a desk. But definitely if you set your laptop down on a kitchen countr to watch while you cook or eat. In that instance, the ability to tilt the screen back more to get a good viewing angle is a big plus.4. Fourth, that DVD player. If you are traveling, it might be a lot easier to buy and watch a DVD than to stream content, especially in countries and hotels with low bandwidth, or if you are paying by amount of download (using your phone to create a wifi hotspot, for example).I have an ultralight, ultra compact external DVD player, and it simply doesn’t beat a built in player in terms of convenience. There IS one modification I would recommend now that 2012 has rolled around, and that is swapping out the existing hard drive for an SSD (solid state drive). I replaced my stock 320 gb hard drive with a Crucial 256 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT256M4SSD2. Current cost, as of this review, is just a little over $200 which is a big drop from last year. I believe a 128 gb SSD would also be sufficient for many users (Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2 and that has been fluctuating between about 100 and 115. You should use the Get Info function on your MacBook to see how much of your hard drive you are currently using and choose a hard drive accordingly. For me, 128 gb is sufficient for my music (but I mostly listen on an iPod anyway) and you can always upload to, and then stream from, Amazon or Google for free. I either download a few hours of episodes for trips or buy DVD’s during the trips – DVD’s are still more efficient for me.Your MacBook will fly once the SSD is installed – the SSD I linked to uses the speedier SATA III interface while the stock hard drive is only SATA II, and of course all random read/writes are much faster simply due to the nature of the SSD which uses an ‘electronic map’ to locate data instead of moving a head over a platter. The iFixit hard drive replacement instructions I mentioned above are very clear except for two points:A. Apple rolled out a ‘firmware’ (BIOS) update months ago which allows you to install your operating system on your new hard drive WITHOUT DVD disks OR a USB key. To take advantage of this ability, you MUST make sure all software updates have been installed. Just go to ‘About this Mac’ and click on Software Update and catch up if you haven’t already.B. When you hold down the Command-R keys on first boot up with your new hard drive, your MacBook Pro will launch a program that contains both a disk utility and the OS install program. BEFORE you attempt to install the OS, you must use the disk utility to ‘partition’ the new hard drive. Apple will offer you defaults – you need a ‘single’ partition using ‘GUID’. If those two options are selected, you will have access to the entire hard drive to install the operating system. By signing in at the appropriate moment with the same Apple ID that was used on the last hard drive, there is no charge for reinstalling the operating system. After completing installation, you will need to reset your preferences, which generally isn’t an urgent matter (click manually on trackpad, or tap to click, for example). Then take 2 minutes to mount your old hard drive in a case like this Vantec NexStar TX 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure and connect to your MacBook Pro via the provided USB cable and move over your data files. iTunes data files can be a little tricky if you want to preserve ratings, search online, otherwise it’s a simple copy (not a ‘cut’) to your new drive using Finder. You should order a Torx T6 driver and Phillips #00 screwdriver if you don’t already have them. Silverhill Tools ASDPH00 Phillips Screwdriver Tool Kit, Size-PH00 is the one I used. It fit perfectly on the case screws. These are tiny screws and I didn’t want to risk stripping them with a wrong sized screwdriver or one with a soft head. You can order these parts (external drive housing, Torx, and Phillips) when you order your SSD.If you have any questions, I will try to answer them in the Comments.Read more 9 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSamm Brown1.0 out of 5 starsLearn GreekSeptember 10, 2018Verified PurchaseThis product has ended up being more trouble than what it was worth. Aside from being extremely slow, it has the strangest errors that even baffle the workers at Apple. For instance, it has randomly began typing in a mix of random symbols and the Greek alphabet when I try to type with my keyboard. And I have checked the keyboard settings to make sure they are correct and they are. It also has stopped signing into the hard drive unless connected to WiFi. Also, at random moments, it won’t let me sign into my computer because it won’t recognize certain keys. It just makes the error chime when I press them. These are just a few of the issues I have had with this computer.Read more One person found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseLarryNC5.0 out of 5 starsMy first Apple Laptop!September 9, 2011Verified PurchaseI have been wanting a Mac Laptop for quite a few years. I usually ended up purchasing a desktop because for the price, you will usually end up getting a machine with better specs. I kept going back and forth about getting the 13 inch or the 15 inch. I read the reviews and compared the specs and while the 15 inch (top of the line) had much better specs, I had to finally admit that I probably wouldn’t need the discrete video card or the option of quad-core processors. I even went and posted the question on a website for Apple users and the overwhelming advice I received was to get the entry-level 13 inch machine. And in the end, I am very happy that I followed that advice. I went with the entry-level 13 inch machine and I could not be happier with my purchase. This computer is advertised as having the integrated intel video processor with 384 MB of RAM. One of the first things I did was to upgrade my RAM to 8 GB. When you do this you increase the amount of video RAM to 512 MB. This machine starts up very quickly and so far (which is almost two months now) this laptop has done everything that I have asked of it and it has done so without breaking a sweat. In fact, it seems to do anything, very quickly and very easily. I am still very impressed at the build quality that is evident in every aspect of this computer. I am very happy with my purchase and I would, without reservation, highly recommend this machine to anyone. I mostly use my computer for very basic types of stuff. Surfing the web, watching videos on youtube, e-mail and some lightweight document creating. It was fast, very fast, as soon as I started it up, right out of the box. But I must say that I could tell that is was ‘snappier’ after upgrading the RAM to 8 GB. My only plans at this point are to eventually upgrade the hard drive to a larger size. As you already know, it comes standard with a 320 GB HD and while that is fairly large, I would like to increase it to something like 750 GB, which is also an option from apple. The illuminated keyboard is a real plus when typing in a dark room. This is the second laptop that I have ever owned, the first was a PC laptop that I purchased when I was in school for my programming classes. If I had to buy a laptop for the same reasons today as when I was in school, I could use this MacBook Pro, because it has an Intel processor and it can run windows. Apple products have a well deserved reputation for longevity and I plan to use this one for a very long time! I purchased this laptop from Amazon because they offered it at a better price than purchasing it from the Apple online store and it came with free shipping.Read more 6 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 382 reviewsWrite a customer review Customers also shopped forPage 1 of 1 Start overPage 1 of 1 This shopping feature will continue to load items.
